State of Success: Michigan - What's the State of Your Success?

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/NMaSR)
Through The Mythic Group and my involvement with the United Nations Association - YPIC Greater Detroit chapter as director of the Entrepreneurship Committee, I'm spearheading a conference to encourage the growth (some would say rebirth) of Michigan as fertile territory for small business and entrepreneurship.

This is my vision for the event:

The State of Success: Michigan Cross-County Conference is a distributed event organized by The Mythic Group and the Entrepreneurship Committee of the UNA-YPIC. It will take place at several different venues over the course of four days Friday, Jan. 16, 2010, to Monday, Jan. 19, 2010, in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties in Southeastern Michigan. We will include other counties if possible through the involvement of other organizations.

The conference is a multipurpose event with three core elements:

  1. Change the public discourse about Michigan: Are you as tired as I am of the popular dialogue revolving around our region? Factional incivility and in-fighting that undermines common goals, negative political discussion both in-state and out-of-state, national magazines making studies of our despair and disrepair ... it's past time to change the talk. That doesn't mean sugarcoating our weaknesses; it means accentuating our strengths. We need to both raise Michigan morale and build upon legitimate Michigan momentum.

  2. Answer the question, "Why would anyone want to stay in Michigan?": Government, schools, jobs, and other things we think of as institutions have been under assault in this state. But, we're still here, and there is hope. This conference should help people clearly see that hope and understand what to expect and how to do their part to see Michigan improve. Thorugh this event we must create relationships with one another, because every consumer and business owner, citizen and politician, stranger and neighbor with whom you share this state is a potential partner and resource with the common interest of strengthing Michigan.

  3. Give people hope about the future of doing business in Michigan: It is crucial that we help people connect to the other people, products, services, and resources that will help them succeed here. By showing successes of the previous year, we will look forward to the coming year and how we will build upon that success. Let's give people reason for hope for financial and business success in Michigan.

I intend on seeing this conference happen in a unique way. Instead of being held at a central location, it will be a distributed event, occuring at several locations around the state over the course of the MLK Day weekend. As I write this, it is Veterans Day, a day about gratitude and freedom in America. In my view, entrepreneurship is all about freedom, and that weekend allows us to rally behind that sentiment. All successes in the state may not directly involve entrepreneurship, but the concept of taking control of one's financial destiny in that way sums up the promise of freedom for me, and I think that is a theme that resonates in these trying economic times.

I would like presenters to explore a variety of topics on the theme of success. Both speakers and venues should trumpet and reveal their successes over the previous year. Snapshots of local successful startups and small businesses, projects that have promoted the success of individuals, Michigan's business role on the world stage, how Michigan businesses have survived and even grown during the recession, the future of Green tech and business in the state, the growth of the Michigan film industry, prospecting in the state, local pockets of prosperity largely unaffected by the economic downturn -- all of these are fertile subjects to dig into and present.

It's my hope that this conference will encourage the proliferation of sustainable engines for economic growth (jobs, business income, etc.) in the state, particularly in SE Michigan, the area of operation for our chapter of UNA-YPIC and the place where the national spotlight often rests. I also want it to bring profitable returns not only to my company and to our organization, but to all involved presenters, attendees, venues, sponsors, organizations, and participants. I'm interested in the idea of it contributing to the establishment of something I call The Phoenix Fund, which would be managed by a 501(c)(3) and dedicated to awarding endowments to entrepreneurs and small businesses with a high probability of transforming an endowment into regional economic growth.

If you would like to participate as a sponsor, presentor, host, organizer, or attendee, please let me know. A good way to do that would be to contact me at ron@mythicgroup.com. Another would be to call 734-968-9301 and ask for Ron Marshall. Or just jump into the conversation here or on Facebook: http://ping.fm/hkduV

Best of the best, worst of the rest.

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/cWWy4)
Can we officially place a moratorium on the term "NFL parity"?

Apparently, the implementation of a salary cap can only keep a league balanced for so long. These days, in view of the perennial ineptitude of the Lions and Raiders, the farcical shenanigans that are always going on in Cleveland, and the demolition job that the Patriots just completed on the Tennessee Titans, one's gotta wonder where all that parity has gone.

A scant few years ago, it seemed the Super Bowl was in almost any team's grasp from year to year. Sure, the Patriots found a way to create a dynasty there, and the Steelers were always good, but the salary cap made things much more balanced, right?

Not really, because the biggest deficit for most hapless franchises is in the hats of the people running those terrible teams, not their pocketbooks. Do you really think the Lions would lift a Lombardi if they were able to spend twice as much as the Pats? Three times as much?

Me neither.

I think it's time to face facts: the football teams at the bottom of each of the NFL's eight divisions have combined to win seven games. Only one of those teams had a legitimate chance of winning anything last year -- the Titans. This year, they're the worst team in football. Yet, the Patriots, Colts, Giants and Steelers are doing what we expect them to do -- driving toward the playoffs as usual.

Is there any chance that maybe, just maybe, it's brains, not cash, that builds a franchise?

Open a checking account, see a movie for free and help fight leukemia

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/2tADx)
(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/ZiiS9)

Ready to stand up for a good cause in a way that won't cost you a dime? If you're age 18 or older and do not currently have a BestBank account, just come to the event on Tuesday at the Canton Cinema (43555 Ford Rd., between Morton Taylor and Sheldon), and bring your state-issued ID and $25 to deposit into a new, free checking account that you can open right there at the theater. Again, the $25 is your money. You simply deposit it into your new account -- there is no cost or fee.

However, for every new checking account that is opened, we get to help the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan get closer to its goal of fighting leukemia, and you get to see a movie that starts between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for free.

For every 10 people new to BestBank who open checking accounts at the event, Mythic Group will donate $25.00 to the Children's Leukemia Foundation to help the CLF fight against leukemia.

If you want to open your BestBank checking account before the event and you want to ensure you get your free movie, too, go to the BestBank branch inside Kroger in Canton at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Canton Center Rd. before 6 p.m. Tell them you are using referral account RM-2720, open your checking account, and bring a confirmation slip signed and dated by a bank representative to the event.

Even if you already have a bank or credit union, this costs you nothing, gives you a good time (and checking account) for free, and will help a good cause. Please help us in our efforts to stamp out leukemia. We really appreciate it. Thank you!

If you have any questions or concerns, please call Ron Marshall at 734-968-9301.

The Mythic View: Business Models

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/gLBi3)
What is a business model?

According to Michael Rappa at DigitalEnterprise.org:
"In the most basic sense, a business model is the method of doing business by which a company can sustain itself -- that is, generate revenue. The business model spells-out how a company makes money by specifying where it is positioned in the value chain."

During the '90s, when the Internet was the boom town where coders and b-school students were panning for easy gold, the term "business model" was all the rage. In practice, however, out on the frontier where Web-based businesses operate, that definition often lacked that crucial "makes money" element. Now, as the Web has become more established, and importantly, as new thought has entered every sector of business, both online and off, as a result of the experience born of the last 15 years of commercial exploitation of the Internet, business models everywhere are undergoing greater examination as a matter of necessity.

In the current economy, a company needn't be an online grocery store to see its business model break. Last week, we witnessed the inevitable correction of the automotive industry in illuminated spectacularly by the bankruptcy of GM. The old model which was reliant on the impossibility surrounding making, marketing and selling their cars and trucks, and in recent years, even more reliant on making money through financing, is being given an overhaul at former GM holding Saturn, now owner by Roger Penske. The Detroit Free Press quotes him:
"The proposed acquisition marks the beginning of a new business model in this industry," he wrote, "a model in which the distribution side of the business controls the brand, and manufacturing is conducted by one or more sub-contractors."

This week, we'll explore current thinking about business models, take a look back at some historical changes, and try to scry what the future holds so that we aren't doomed to repeat the past. Here's what's coming up (links will go live as the items are posted):

  • Wednesday, June 9 on Associated Content - The Business Model Year: Many traditionally solid businesses with traditionally solid business models have been taken a beating over the last year. We'll look back at the tumult and try to figure out who was felled by fundamental flaws, and who has the opportunity to tweak their models and come back stronger than before.

  • Thursday on Helium - Business Models in Motion: We'll get an overview of business models throughout history and see some of the wrong turns that we brilliant folk of the 21st century would never, ever make ourselves. *ahem*

  • Friday on Facebook - "I have stared into the abyss, and it was my business model": We'll take a look at a small business that had to stare its own business model square in the face ... and blink.

  • Saturday on eHow - How to Develop Business Model that Won't Break: Hopefully, we'll be able to tell you how to do just that!

  • Sunday in our own forums - your thoughts: What's your business model? Is it sustainable in the long run? Is it time to make a change?

  • Monday on our inaugural podcast - our thoughts: We'll review this week's discussion on business models and talk about some of your salient comments ...

... Now make some! We want to hear from you. Have you examined or changed your business model lately? Are you nursing a new business idea and trying to figure out where your revenue will come from? Please click on the comments link and let us know!

The Monday Group: Always Up for First Down

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/rCNes)
And yea, verily, the time has come once more for anticipation of that most American of Sunday rituals: fantasy football. With the return of Yahoo! Fantasy Football leagues (amidst off-the-field legal wranglings with important implications for the fantasy sports biz), Mythic Group's favorite fantasy site is entering this season stronger and faster than the season before.

Fantasy Champion Network (aka fanchamp.net aka fanchampnet.com), produced by Mythic Group LLC, is a fantasy sports hub. It contains a blog that informs and entertains, speaking to fantasy fans everywhere about subjects close to the hearts of sports aficianados and provides a little insight that may help fantasy team owners win their leagues as well. FCN also has a social network that facilitates interaction between fantasy players, helping fill leagues and keeping people involved throughout the season and offseason.

Forthcoming in time for the fall:

  • A portal to a wealth of fantasy sports resources from around the Web.

  • Help with management of league fees

  • Assistance to equip leagues with prizes

Interested? More info will be available at fanchamp.net by Thursday. Strap your helmets on tight!

The Monday Group: GM A-Go-Go? Or, General Microsoft vs. Open Opel

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/atY2m)
Hi! Here's hoping you had a wonderful weekend, full of the type of joy and merriment only a post-apocalyptic, war-vs.-the-machines-ravaged future and an unlikely, yet highly foreseeable, NBA Playoffs upset can bring.

What about us? We've been in the lab concocting the type of dynamic small business solutions that will revolutionize the world. More on that in a second.

First, I'd like to relate a conversation with a bank teller. The specifics are not the point, but the very-salient gist was this: the bankruptcy of General Motors may not be the saving grace most of the principle players (i.e., the federal government and auto industry execs inside and outside the company) would like to cast it to be. For the record, I hold to the belief that this bankruptcy reorganization, while devastatingly painful in the short-term, was likely the only viable option for a company that persisted in remaining a bloated whale while its overseas competition was busy becoming a school of cunning, hungry sharks.

I told the teller I thought so, but she contended that the opportunity was there for GM to receive the help it may have needed to pull out of its high-velocity descent if the loan assistance it received from the federal government had been structured differently. She also believed that the share of ownership government now holds in the company will not only be detrimental for GM's long-term prospects, but has the potential to lead to the end of the UAW. Overall, she doesn't think that the current administration's "on paper" support for labor will protect it, and that after this administration departs, the United Auto Workers won't be far behind.

I don't hold quite so fatalistic a viewpoint. I think there will be some industry-wide change, and there needs to be, but my hope is that the greatest alterations will take place in terms of the American automotive business model. The old days of redundant products with insignificant periodic updates that underwhelm more consumers than they attract should be permanently retired - and when we're done fixing Microsoft, maybe we can give GM a try, too. Maybe this will be the impetus that Detroit needs in order to realize that we don't need three versions of the exact same car with different words on the back, and we certainly don't need them to come out every year. Oh, and we know who killed the electric car. Why don't we stop doing that?

These lessons may ultimately be absorbed by GM's smaller cousins GM Europe and Opel. Saved at the wire by a deal with the German government, these two, now with less U.S. ownership may ultimately find themselves in position to change the game on a smaller scale. Future plans for the companies remain unknown, and it's a probably a bit premature to declare a beginning to the era of a large-scale Open Automotive movement ... but, let's face it: you and your buddies could probably build a better ride than the Edsel. Heck, all it really takes to change the industry is a man and his dream.

One thing that we do know the future holds is a great deal for those of you who need to advertise online. Are there any hands not raised out there? Do you know telepathy? If not, then consider yourself one who does. And this is your day, because we've cooked up something awesome.

Right now, we're offering you 100,000 ads on Google, Facebook, and our network of associated sites for only $99. That's 99 bucks for a block of 100,000 advertisements. Yes, your eyes are working.

What good is traffic, if your site's visitors aren't going to take the actions you want? That's absolutely crucial because every penny you spend on advertising is critically important. With this program, however, you don't need to have an ad written or designed; our professional copy writers will mold your messages into succinct, concise, effective ads that will engage audiences across the Web and help you achieve your online goals.

How do you get started? Glad you asked. Just do one of the following, and we'll get started making your site goals come true with a truly unique service at a price you can't beat:

To get started, you can do any one of the following:

  • Follow us and then send us a Direct Message on Twitter. Just write "100K Ads", send URL of the page on your site that you want visitors to land on, and give us info to contact you.

  • Join our Group on Facebook and write "I want 100K Ads" on our Wall. We'll send you a message on Facebook to get started.

  • E-mail me at ron (at) mythicgroup (dot) com with the subject line "100K Ads for $99" - we'll reply to you and have your ads running in no time!

Thanks for spending this time here with me. Please come back tomorrow as we begin a new series highlighting solutions to problems facing small business today. It will span across many online networks, but you've gotta start here to get the whole story!

Thanks again,

This Mythic Week: Avoiding Booze, Hitting Snooze, Client Grooves, and Now, Here's the News ...

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/BOQlr)
Hello, all! Please take your seats; we have a lot to cover today. Let's get straight to it then, shall we?

First off, I hope that everyone had a safe holiday weekend. Many see Memorial Day as a day to remember those lost, some use it as a day to celebrate family, friends and the unofficial start of summer. I hope it gave you the time to reflect upon the price and value of freedom and serves as a reminder of the things in life worth fighting for. No matter how you spent the day, I hope you kept the BBQ and alcohol in check, enjoyed yourself responsibly, and are ready for what the work week will bring.

That said, it's time to stop hitting the snooze button, and wake up! The Mythic Group has a lot planned, and it's high time we let you in on some details. For one thing, you can look forward to returning here every Monday for our weekly news feature, The Monday Group. We'll talk about what The Mythic Group has been up to and the exciting projects we have coming up. We'll also direct attention to cool things that others in the small business community have going on. You can help us by letting us know.

Speaking of exciting projects, I have a meeting tomorrow regarding a music industry site for a potential client. It promises to be an intriguing implementation with some nice offline stuff involved as well. We can't wait to let you know more when it's feasible; let's hope the client selects us. If they do, what we have planned for it promises to be spectacular.

And the things we have planned for this site should be pretty impressive, too! Along with The Morning Group, we'll be doing a weekly feature across a number of online publishing platforms highlighting important subjects to small businesses. The main installment will be posted here on Tuesdays beginning June 2, and the supplemental portions of the piece will extend across the Web through several outlets, each presenting unique content that supports the main story. As the Bard once wrote, "All the world's a sidebar, and we are merely widgets." Boy, was that guy before his time.

Keep an eye on this spot for other upcoming features, other fantastic authors (each a Shakespeare in his or her own writer, I'm sure), and more from The Mythic Group!

Thank you kindly,

Ron

BTW - At 11:20 a.m. ET, ya gotta love Chauncey Billups.
